Meet The Museum’s New Executive Director — Ryan Mahoney

The Museum’s Board of Trustees is extremely pleased to name Ryan Mahoney its Executive Director.  Meet Ryan at our “Volunteer Appreciation Holiday Gathering” on Sunday, December 8, 1-3 PM.  Ryan, a Schenectady, NY, resident and a native of Indian Lake, NY, is a long-time supporter of Irish cultural and heritage activities. “Museums are more than just places to see “neat” things or where you go to read long panels on subjects.  Museums can inspire dialogue that encourages people to think differently about their relationship to others or to the world.”  He comes to the Museum from The Schenectady County Historical Society where he served as Curator/Director of Collections and Historic Sites, responsible for all aspects of collections care, interpretation, grant writing, public programming, budget, exhibit scheduling and installation, educational programming, staff administration, membership development, fund raising and volunteer coordination at the SCHS Museum, Mabee Farm, and George E. Franchere Education Center. Further, he was co-producer of the documentary film Wake of Irene: Heart of the Storm. Previously he served as Collections Manager at the FASNY Museum of Firefighting in Hudson, NY; Collections Assistant at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY, and; Collections Technician at the Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, MA; and in the Education Department at the Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake, NY. Ryan graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. John Fisher College, Rochester, NY, with a Bachelor of Arts and Dual Major in History and Political Science and earned his Master of Arts in Public History from SUNY Albany.  He has taught Introduction into Museum Exhibits at Schenectady County Community College and lectured at various institutions on collections, exhibit development, and a number of historical events. Currently, he is also a contributor to the New York History Blog.

  1. Very impressive. I think they are lucky to have you on their team.

  2. I have worked with Ryan for several years while he was at the Schenectady County Historical Society. He is very creative and a breath of fresh air with his creative exhibits. Every time he showed me a new exhibit I was quickly drawn into the story, and waiting for the next chapter. The new Irish Influence in the Adirondacks exhibit is another one of his gems and one you do not want to miss. Ryan is a keeper and one who will make everyone wish they where Irish.
