Capital District Irish in the US Civil War with Damian Shiels

Damian Shiels publishes the popular Irish in the American Civil War blog online and works extensively with the military pension files. Over a number of years, he has been systematically analyzing files looking for working-class Irish correspondence, to highlight the experience of ordinary Irish and Irish Americans during the war. For this talk, he highlights the lives of soldiers from New York State, examining their motives for joining, as well as their experiences at the front.
