IAHM’S 2025 ERIE CANAL BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION SERIES - Movie Screening, Tom Garber’s film Creating the Erie Canal

Reserve your seat/tickets here. Free admission.

The Erie Canal is part of our rich heritage as Irish, Irish Americans, and as New Yorkers. The Irish American Heritage Museum is hosting a week-long celebration of the Erie Canal’s Bicentennial. Part of that programming is the free screening of a powerful movie, which honors the remarkable accomplishments of those who built the waterway and celebrate the long-term effects on our commerce and communities.

Before the steam engine, before the industrial revolution, when the only source of power came from ones own hands and mind, a group of upstate New York pioneers engineered and built the world’s longest hand dug canal. Most of these country surveyors, teachers, and farmers had never seen a canal. What they lacked in experience they made up for in ingenuity.

Considered the first and most transformative public works project in American history, the Erie Canal defined the development of a young United States. It was the leading reason New York City became a principal port and upstate New York a major agricultural and industrial center for over a century.

Our comprehension of the canal builder’s faith in their unproven abilities, and methodology for success, stands as an inspiration for future endeavors.

The Irish American Heritage Museum is grateful for its sponsors, including the Flanagan Family, Common Roots Brewing Company, Park Albany and Metroland Now.
