Slant tells the story of a Cork-born woman named Ro McCarthy, who left Ireland for Boston in the 1980s- looking for work while seeking refuge from the homophobia she faced at home. Ro comes out while living in America and after losing many of her gay male friends to AIDS, she finds purpose in advocating for the gay community. The novel follows her journey from the time Ro was coming out in Boston, to her gathering signatures for the 2015 marriage equality referendum, and her pivotal life experiences, relationships, and trauma along the way.
